When it comes to remodelling, renovation, or new construction, exterior surfaces are as crucial as interior ones in terms of aesthetics and longevity. High-pressure Laminates (HPL) and Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) are among the widely used surfacing materials for various applications such as facades, parapets, and soffits. The ongoing debate about the superiority of these two materials as surfacing material often boils down to their suitability for wall cladding. In this blog, we present a quick comparison between HPL and ACP sheets as the ultimate cladding material.
Construction
The fundamental difference between HPL and ACP sheets lies in their composition and manufacturing process. HPL sheets are made by treating multiple layers of Kraft paper with thermosetting resins and then compressing them under immense pressure (generally more than 1000 PSI). ACP sheets, on the other hand, consist of a multi-layered polyethylene core containing a protection film; PVDF; primer coating; aluminium coil; polyolefin; LDPE; and service coating, sandwiched between two layers of aluminium coil.

Design Options
Both HPL sheets and ACP sheets offer a wide range of colours and design options that enhance the aesthetic appeal of your properties (both commercial and residential). However, HPL sheets outperform ACP sheets when it comes to finishing options, which include matte and gloss finish. Additionally, the top aluminium layer of ACP sheets, when exposed to moisture, forms a layer of Aluminium hydroxide, which diminishes the overall appearance of the exterior surfaces over the years.
Weather Resistance
Both HPL and ACP sheets are highly weather-resistant owing to their multi-layered composition, making them extensively used as exterior wall cladding. The thermosetting resins equip HPL sheets with several special attributes, including weather resistance.

Moulding
Moulding is a crucial aspect when it comes to ease of installation. Both materials have different moulding capabilities – laminate wall cladding is more suited for flat and straight surfaces, whereas, ACP wall cladding can be moulded from 90 to 45 degrees. This makes ACP sheets an ideal choice as a surfacing material for curved surfaces (provided, the sheets should be thin).
