Interior and exterior wall cladding from Greenlam Clads Exterior Cladding / Wall Cladding

Designers and architects, these days, turn to various materials to improve the aesthetics and lifespan of walls, and keep maintenance costs to the lowest. Using decorative wall cladding is one such option. While wall cladding promise unmatched appeal and lifespan, the installation calls for some preparations and precautions. Further on the subject, in this blog post, we discuss some tips to follow when installing wall cladding. Read on.

Taking Setting into Consideration

There’s a wide range of cladding available in the market, each having its own set of attributes such as cost, appeal, lifespan, maintenance, durability, and aptness for a setting. The selection of cladding, therefore, should not only be solely on the basis of looks, but also according to the environment in which it will be installed. Exterior and interior grade cladding have different attributes and the selection, therefore, should be done based on the intended application.

Dealing with Electrical Systems

Wall cladding should be installed in such a way that it does not isolate the electrical connections or fuse board, and there is no evident risk of overheating, electrocution or arching. Also, if there is any electrical fixture behind the cladding, provisions should be made to access that in future. If you plan to shift an existing connection in line with the cladding, it is advisable to bring in an electrician.

Using the Right Battens and Adhesives

Timber battens are used to support the cladding, which are pinned to walls or ceiling before attaching the cladding. Battens are placed on walls at 90 degrees with respect to the cladding planks. Ideal spacing between each batten is around 400mm. Wider battens are used to place heavy items such as basins and radiator. If a surface is fine and flat, a strong adhesive should be used to mount the cladding. Besides having high bonding strength, the adhesive should be water and heat resistant.

Preparing the Cladding

Before putting up the cladding, it has to be prepared to ensure you get the perfect finish. It’s important to wipe the cladding with a damp cloth or cleaner to clean off dust and other particles. Sand the outer surface of cladding and then vacuum the dust. Make sure the edges and corners are processed so that each cladding panel aligns perfectly with the neighbouring ones. After that, apply two finish coats on the surface to prevent timber distortion.
